Keyboardist/singer/songwriter LaLa Craig got her start in her hometown of Oceanside, CA, performing with her family's country band at the tender age of 4. Taking a turn at dabbling for decades in every style imaginable, LaLa found her true calling when the blues spoke to her at the age of 33.
"Almost on a dare" (as she puts it), LaLa entered her first blues tune, 'Blue Is Hardly The Word' in the 1998 San Diego Songwriters Guild Competition & to her astonishment, took home first prize. It was the move that was to send her on a musical sojourn beyond anything she could have possibly imagined.
Her quest to seek authenticity led her to the Mississippi Delta where, like so many blues men & women before her, she sought to unearth for herself the roots of this distinctly American treasure known as the blues, & found herself almost instantly transformed. This transformation did not go unnoticed by Delta blues legend, James "Super Chikan" Johnson, who asked her to join forces in 2002 as part of his all-woman backup band, The Fighting Cocks. Performing at blues fests in 40+ states & 12 countries including France, Iceland, Norway, Mexico, Ireland & Canada, LaLa has developed her own unique rollicking style of tear-it-up, take-no-prisoners boogie blues piano. Paired with her smoky-sweet, 1-of-a-kind vocal style, it's a combination guaranteed to put a smile on every face!
In addition to her work with Super Chikan, LaLa is widely known by MS locals & tourists alike for both her vibrant 1-woman show & her stellar band, LaLa & Element 88. She is a regularly featured artist at Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale.
Her studio credits include 3 CDs with Super Chikan as well as a 14-track original CD entitled 'Bright Blue Light'. Her vividly descriptive songwriting is a mirror-reflection of her eclectic background infused with that twist of authentic blues she moved 2000 miles to find.
LaLa is thrilled that the next chapter of her blues story has begun as she joins the Divas On Fire, & can hardly wait to see what the future holds as part of this powerhouse collective of amazing ladies sharing their talents wherever the road should lead them.
